Welcome

Welcome to Hydration & Everyday Wellbeing.

Water is essential to life, yet remembering to drink enough throughout a busy day can sometimes be surprisingly difficult.

This course is designed to help you understand the importance of hydration and, more importantly, create simple habits that make looking after your hydration easier.

Before You Begin

This course provides general wellbeing education. Individual hydration needs vary depending on factors such as health, activity, environment and medication.

If you have been advised by a healthcare professional to restrict your fluid intake, follow their advice rather than the general information in this course.

What You Will Learn

  • Why water is important for everyday wellbeing
  • How hydration needs can vary
  • Common signs that you may need more fluids
  • Simple ways to remember to drink
  • How to create a realistic hydration routine
  • How hydration can become part of your self-care practice
Lesson 1

Why Hydration Matters

Water plays an important role throughout the body. It is involved in many normal processes including temperature regulation and the movement of substances around the body.

Rather than thinking about hydration as something you only need to think about when you are thirsty, it can be helpful to make drinking regularly part of your everyday routine.

Practice: Your Hydration Check-In

Pause for a moment and ask yourself:

  • When did I last have a drink?
  • Do I usually remember to drink during the day?
  • Do I tend to drink more at certain times?
  • What usually makes me forget?

Reflection

What is your current hydration habit like? Is there one small thing you could improve?

Lesson 2

Recognising Your Body's Signals

Our bodies provide many signals that can remind us to pay attention to our fluid intake.

Thirst is one familiar signal, although it isn't the only thing to consider. Your usual routines, environment and level of activity can all affect how much fluid you need.

The goal isn't to become obsessed with drinking. Instead, develop a relaxed awareness of your body's needs.

Practice: Pause & Notice

At three points today, pause and ask:

  1. How am I feeling?
  2. When did I last have something to drink?
  3. Would a drink be appropriate now?
Lesson 3

Making Hydration Easier

Sometimes the problem isn't that we don't want to drink. We simply forget.

Small environmental reminders can make a big difference.

Simple Strategies

  • Keep a water bottle somewhere visible.
  • Take a drink when you sit down to work.
  • Have water available during your daily routine.
  • Use regular activities as reminders.
  • Carry water when travelling.
  • Make your drinking routine convenient.

Your Challenge

Choose one hydration reminder and use it for the next seven days.

Keep it simple enough that you can realistically maintain it.

Lesson 4

Hydration as Self-Care

Self-care doesn't always need to involve complicated routines. Sometimes it can be as simple as noticing what your body needs.

Taking a moment to have a drink can become a small act of mindfulness.

Mindful Drinking Practice

  1. Pause before taking your drink.
  2. Notice the temperature.
  3. Notice the taste.
  4. Take a slow, comfortable sip.
  5. Notice the sensation as you swallow.
  6. Take a moment before continuing your day.
Lesson 5

Create Your Personal Hydration Routine

Now bring everything together.
