Welcome

Welcome to Mindful Movement From Your Chair.

Movement doesn't always need to mean going to the gym, taking a class or completing a demanding workout. Sometimes the most valuable movement is simply taking a few minutes to move your body with awareness.

This course introduces gentle chair-based movements that can be incorporated into everyday life.

Please Move Gently

This course is designed for gentle general wellbeing. Only perform movements that feel comfortable for you. Never force a movement or work through significant pain.

If you have an injury, medical condition, recent surgery, or concerns about whether movement is suitable for you, seek appropriate professional healthcare advice before starting.

What You Will Learn

  • How to become more aware of your body
  • Simple movements that can be performed from a chair
  • How breathing can accompany movement
  • How to reduce long periods of sitting still
  • How to create short mindful movement breaks
  • How movement can become part of your wellbeing routine
Lesson 1

Arriving In Your Body

Before moving, take a moment to notice how your body feels.

Mindful movement isn't about performing perfectly. It is about paying attention.

Practice: The One-Minute Body Check-In

  1. Sit comfortably with both feet supported.
  2. Allow your shoulders to relax.
  3. Notice your breathing.
  4. Notice where your body meets the chair.
  5. Notice your feet on the floor.
  6. Notice any areas of tension.

There is nothing you need to change. Simply notice.

Reflection

What did you notice when you stopped and paid attention to your body?

Lesson 2

Gentle Shoulder Movement

Many of us hold tension around the shoulders, especially when working at a desk or sitting for long periods.

Practice: Shoulder Rolls

  1. Sit comfortably.
  2. Let your arms rest naturally.
  3. Slowly lift your shoulders.
  4. Gently move them backwards.
  5. Allow them to lower.
  6. Repeat slowly several times.

Keep the movement small and comfortable.

Practice: Shoulder Awareness

After the movement, pause. Notice whether your shoulders feel different.

Lesson 3

Gentle Neck Awareness

The neck can become stiff when we spend long periods looking at screens or sitting in one position.

Do not force your neck or make large circular movements. Keep everything slow, gentle and within a comfortable range.

Practice

  1. Sit upright but comfortably.
  2. Look straight ahead.
  3. Slowly turn your head slightly to one side.
  4. Return to centre.
  5. Repeat gently on the other side.
  6. Return to centre.

You can then gently look slightly down and return to centre. Do not force the movement.

Lesson 4

Hands, Wrists & Fingers

Our hands perform hundreds of movements throughout the day. A short mindful movement break can help us reconnect with them.

Practice

  1. Stretch your hands gently.
  2. Open and close your fingers slowly.
  3. Circle your wrists gently.
  4. Shake your hands loosely.
  5. Rest your hands.

Pay attention to the sensations rather than trying to achieve a particular result.

Lesson 5

Feet & Ankles

If it is comfortable and appropriate for you, bring some gentle movement to your feet and ankles.

Practice

  1. Keep your feet supported.
  2. Lift your heels gently.
  3. Lower them.
  4. Lift your toes gently.
  5. Lower them.
  6. Move one ankle gently in a small circle.
  7. Repeat with the other ankle.
Lesson 6

Movement With Your Breath

Combining gentle movement with awareness of your breathing can turn an ordinary movement break into a mindful practice.

Three-Minute Practice

For approximately three minutes:

  1. Take a comfortable breath.
  2. Move your shoulders gently.
  3. Pause.
  4. Move your hands and fingers.
  5. Pause.
  6. Move your feet and ankles.
  7. Pause.
  8. Take a few comfortable breaths.
Lesson 7

Create Your Movement Routine

The best movement routine is one you can actually maintain. It doesn't need to be long.
